As Minister for Older People I have written to the Culture Secretary, strongly urging the UK Government to take responsibility and fund free TV licences for the over 75s.

"The UK Government's decision to shift what should be a wellbeing policy onto the BBC puts older people at risk of greater loneliness at a time when they are already isolated.

"At a time when older people are having to spend more time indoors due to COVID-19 and with the possibility of prolonged restrictions it would be incredibly difficult for those who are facing tough choices about what they can afford.

"Isolation and loneliness can have a very real impact on older peoples health and we should be doing everything we can to minimise that impact."
