Christina McKelvie, MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse, is delighted that, 615 families in South Lanarkshire have received payments of £600 on the birth of their first child through the Best Start Grant, and £300 on the birth of any siblings. Ms McKelvie is thrilled that so many children in her constituency will have the best start in life thanks to the Scottish Government.

In the first three months, the new benefit paid out £3.5 million to low-income families, and this week First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced applications are now open for low-income families to receive a further £250 when their child starts nursery and school. This new addition is building on the success of the Best Start Grant that saw 10,000 low-income families benefit.

Christina said, “This increase for families and new babies shows what can be achieved with a new approach to Social security, and the Scottish Government has been consistent with its commitment to increasing financial support for families, and creating equality for the children of Scotland”.
