South Lanarkshire has seen an increase in teacher numbers in the last year. The number has increased from 3,282 to 3,296 – 16 new teaching posts to contribute to the best possible school outcomes for the children of Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse.

Christina McKelvie SNP MSP, Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse, expressed her delight: “It is really good news that we have an increased number of teachers in our classrooms. This is another clear example of the Scottish Government’s determination to improve outcomes even under the huge pressures of Tory cuts.

“We now have a record number of school buildings in top condition and this year the SNP Government has built or substantially refurbished 96 schools, including 71 primary schools.”

Continued SNP government investment is improving Scotland’s education system. There are record teacher numbers for this decade and the highest number of primary teachers since 1980. We have higher quality school buildings and most pupils are achieving the expected level of attainment for their stage.

There are 447 more teachers in Scottish classrooms than last year and the highest number of primary school teachers since 1980
