As the MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall, and Stonehouse, I am deeply committed to tackling child poverty in our communities. Following First Minister John Swinney’s recent speech, I am more determined than ever to make this vision a reality.
The First Minister has outlined a comprehensive plan to eradicate child poverty in Scotland, rooted in three key pillars: a dignified and generous social security system, people-centred public services, and a positive education system. These pillars form the foundation of our long-term strategy to address this pressing issue.
In Hamilton, Larkhall, and Stonehouse, we are already seeing the positive impact of the SNP’s Social Security System. The Scottish Child Payment is providing much-needed support to families, and from next year, we will abolish the two-child benefit cap, further alleviating financial pressures on households.
Eradicating child poverty is my number one mission. It will require bold actions and innovative thinking, as well as collaboration across our communities. My commitment to this cause remains unwavering, and I continue to support and engage with the efforts of local government, organisations, and residents.
I fully support the First Minister’s long-term vision to eradicate child poverty through a dignified and generous social security system, people-centred public services, and a positive education system. The SNP is on the side of Scotland, and while there is more to do, the hard work of eradicating child poverty is already well underway.
First Minister John Swinney emphasised the importance of community and connection in his speech, stating, “We thrive, we flourish, we are most ourselves not when we stand alone, but when we stand with others.” He also highlighted the moral, economic, and social imperatives of eradicating child poverty, noting that “Scotland will never reach its full potential unless and until each and every one of us is able to flourish.”
Together, we can create a brighter future for all children in Hamilton, Larkhall, and Stonehouse. Let’s continue to work together, support one another, and make this vision a reality.
