South Lanarkshire Council Leader John Ross has announced his intention to work with other parties within the local authority to bring positive change to Hamilton town centre.

Following the report published by Angela Crawley MP and Christina McKelvie MSP last year, the council will now look at how best to implement change that will revitalise our town centre.

The changes outlined by the ‘Our Town, Your Voice’ report included opening Quarry Street to traffic and changing the parking management system.

For the proposals to be implemented, the recommendations will have to be approved at committee stage. The first committees of the new term begin in August.

Commenting on his announcement, John Ross said:

“Having lived and worked in Hamilton for the last 40 years, I know the opportunities and challenges Hamilton presents.

“Hamilton is a great place to live and work, but it could be better.

“If simple changes around parking management and traffic flow are made, I believe that our town centre will reap the rewards.

“Hamilton needs change if we are to see it flourish and with a new administration, there is a political will to do things differently.

“So as we now look forward to committee, I call on councillors from every political party to engage constructively in the process, work alongside us and help us put the heart back into Hamilton.”

Christina McKelvie MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse added:

“Our town centre report laid bare the massive regeneration potential that Hamilton holds. It is now time to act upon that potential.

“Over the past few months, we have had constructive meetings with South Lanarkshire Council regarding Hamilton town centre.

“Hamilton is bigger than party politics – I would urge all to get round the table, listen to our proposals and work with us to revitalise our town.”

Following on, Angela Crawley MP said:

“This is a massive step forwards in our ambitions to revitalise Hamilton town centre, however there is still more work to do.

“For our proposals to be realised, councillors will have to vote through a package of change at committee.

“I hope you will therefore join me in urging our elected members to back our plan and, in doing so, help bring people, jobs and businesses to back Hamilton.”
