Christina McKelvie MSP has today encouraged all residents in Hamilton, Stonehouse and Larkhall to take part in the Scottish Government’s consultation regarding the proposed changes to social security in Scotland.

The Scotland Bill, which has devolved certain, limited welfare powers to Scotland, gives the Scottish Government the opportunity to create a unique Scottish social security system. The consultation, which closes on Friday 28th October, will inform the proposed Scottish Social Security Bill, which will be presented before the end of the parliamentary term.

Commenting, Christina said:

“I’m encouraging all those within my constituency to make sure their voice is heard by taking part in this consultation.

“The SNP has long argued for welfare to be devolved to Scotland and we will ensure that the full power of the Scottish Parliament is used to administer these new powers.

“Despite the powers being limited in scope, it gives us all the opportunity to transform our welfare system – placing dignity, fairness and respect right at its core.

“These core principles are absolutely fundamental in building the type of society we want to live in. I implore all people within my constituency to help us achieve this by taking part in the consultation.”
