Christina McKelvie, MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse, has sent a fraternal message of solidarity to Galicians commending the National Day of Galicia on 25 July.
Throughout the Dia Nacional de Galicia, demonstrations and celebrations take place to commemorate this unique autonomous region of Spain.
Christina was contacted by Xoán Bascuas, the General Secretary of the Compromiso por Galicia, a centre-left political party founded in December 2012 with the goal of achieving greater self-government for Galicia.
“I was delighted to celebrate the Dia Nacional de Galicia alongside my friends and colleagues there. While the circumstances are different in all cases, the cause of self-determination is one that transcends boundaries and borders.
“Unsurprisingly, I’ve long been a proponent of the right to peaceful self-determination – not just for Scotland, but right across the globe.
“During the Independence Referendum, I forged close ties with members of the Galician community; ties that have strongly continued to this day. It was humbling to see people from different backgrounds and nationalities send messages of solidarity in 2014. I gladly reciprocate that solidarity now with my friends in Galicia.
“I send my heartfelt greetings for this National Day of Galicia and wish everyone a successful and positive day of celebration.”
