Christina McKelvie MSP says she is “thrilled and delighted” to take up the role of Convener of the Scottish Parliament’s Equal Opportunities and Human Rights Committee.

“Not only is this whole area of huge interest to me, it’s the area I have probably worked hardest on in order to get legislation against Revenge Porn, improving the rights of victims of domestic violence, fighting against human trafficking and supporting trade unions in fights against discriminatory pay regimes.

“It has been fantastic acting as Convener on the European and External Affairs Committee since it was established in June 2011. I have met many fascinating people and learned a vast amount about just how important EU legislation is to Scotland.

“Now I relish the prospect of encouraging this committee to examine new and exciting directions; ways in which we, as a committee, can really work to better equal opportunities and our human rights.

“Europe will not move off the agenda since that is where are essential human rights are enshrined in legislation but in Scotland, we will be searching hard for ways in which we can build on what we have achieved to date.”
