Christina Mckelvie MSP with Sally Tyrrell, founder of the Post Natal Depression Support Group
Back in August, Christina McKelvie MSP gave a warm welcome to the launch of a new Post Natal Depression Support Group in Hamilton.
The group, founded by Sally Tyrrell, provides peer-to-peer support for women who have endured the emotional and physical destructiveness of PND.
Sally, who has herself suffered the ravages of severe PND, wanted to establish an easy to access support group for sufferers to meet together and share their experiences, thus providing a level of support that is not otherwise available.
Christina joined Sally in Hamilton to give her a £100 donation last week and said: “I have been enormously impressed with what Sally has managed to achieve so far and I support her efforts wholeheartedly.
“By sharing what you’re going through with other people in the same place, these mums are starting to rebuild their confidence and emotional security again. That’s something no prescription for anti-depressants can manage.”
Just three months on, the support groups in Uddingston and Hamilton are going well and attracting between five and 10 mums at each weekly group.
Sally added: “I believe that we are providing a vital network for mums at our weekly group meetings. I would like to be able to provide a qualified PND counsellor at the Hamilton meetings but so far have been unable to raise funding for that. I continue to seek out a way of doing this because I feel it would really help the mums.
“I am sincerely grateful to Christina for her support, both in kind and in this donation and I look ahead to further building and improving the service we provide.”
